- An AI-first engineering environment, where technical leadership is expected to shape how AI changes the way software is built.
- Full-time and permanent position with Travel Benefit! Based at our new Product Innovation Centre in Adelaide!
Join Qantas at our Product Innovation Centre in Adelaide, where we build and run the digital products our customers and our people depend on. This role sits within one of our Salesforce squads, alongside a Product Manager, a designer and a business analyst, working on an enduring product with live users.
The Software Technical Lead – Salesforce leads a dedicated engineering team — typically two to three developers and a tester — within a cross-functional squad.
The role is deliberately hands-on
approximately half your week will be spent in the code, and the remainder leading, reviewing and coaching. Your team owns what it builds in production, for the life of the product.
At Qantas we operate a product operating model, and it differs materially from both project delivery and a managed service. Work arrives as problems to solve rather than specifications to build, and discovery runs alongside delivery rather than ahead of it. Much of the market’s experience sits in project or managed-service delivery, and we are not screening that out. What we do look for is an understanding of how this model differs, and clear reasons for wanting to work in it.
The Product Innovation Centre is AI-first, and this extends well beyond delivering AI features to customers. This is new ground and we are not expecting settled answers. What matters is a considered view, hands-on experience with these tools in your own work, and a sense of where you would start with a team of this size.
What you will be doing
- Leading a team of skilled engineers, providing direct people management and technical expertise
- Partnering with the Product Manager as a co-owner of the product rather than a supplier to it, bringing what the platform makes possible into prioritisation decisions, making the cost of technical choices visible, and helping shape which problems are worth solving.
- Belong to our engineering community of practice, where technical leads set the shared standards we build to and exchange ideas on how to evolve the craft.
What you’ll bring
- A minimum of 7 years’ hands-on Salesforce engineering experience, including responsibility for systems you have built in live operation. This is a senior role: your Product Manager should seek your technical counsel, and your team should trust your judgement in a code review.
- 3+ years’ experience leading an engineering team, including its more demanding aspects: giving direct feedback on code quality, mentoring an engineer, and upholding a standard under delivery pressure.
- Expert Salesforce development experience: Apex, Lightning Web Components and Flow-based automation: with a working command of governor limits and platform constraints.
- Experience owning the technical design of an application and being accountable for how it behaves in production: incident response, three Salesforce releases each year, and the ongoing management of technical debt rather than handing it over.
- Strong understanding of the Salesforce integration stack REST APIs, Platform Events, named and external credentials and the security considerations that come with each.
- Experience within a squad where discovery and delivery run continuously, and confidence working to a roadmap that evolves in response to evidence.
- Credibility with technical and non-technical colleagues alike, and the ability to influence outcomes without relying on formal authority.
- Modern engineering practice source control, a defined branching model, automated testing and a deployment pipeline you would be comfortable defending.
- Hands-on use of AI-assisted development tools in your own engineering practice, and experience introducing a new tool or practice to a team.
- A strong orientation towards ownership, with a natural preference for addressing root cause over closing a ticket.
Desirable, but not essential
- Salesforce certifications in the developer or architect stream, such as Platform Developer II or Application Architect.
- A Java or object-oriented programming background, which translates readily to Apex.
- Contact centre, customer service/portal or CRM domain experience.
