Description

Storage Engineer

Location

San Diego, California | Hands-on work in our datacenter

Our Company

At Teradata, we believe that people thrive when empowered with better information. Our cloud analytics and data platform helps customers make better, more confident decisions. The world's top companies across every major industry trust Teradata to improve business performance, enrich customer experiences, and integrate data across the enterprise.

What You Will Do

We are seeking a Storage Engineer to design, integrate, validate, and support enterprise storage solutions for Teradata platforms. You will work across storage hardware, firmware, Linux, networking, and manufacturing to deliver reliable, secure, and scalable systems from initial qualification through production and ongoing maintenance.

This hands-on role combines storage engineering, performance analysis, automation, and root-cause investigation. You will partner with engineering teams, storage vendors, manufacturing partners, and field organizations to resolve issues and improve storage reliability throughout the product lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, integrate, and validate storage hardware, firmware, software, and management utilities for new products and sustaining releases.
  • Configure and test high availability, fault tolerance, failover, recovery, and data protection; validate resiliency under component and system failures.
  • Benchmark storage performance and analyze throughput, latency, and resource utilization across representative workloads.
  • Lead root-cause analysis across storage devices, controllers, firmware, Linux, and network interfaces; work with vendors on corrective actions.
  • Develop Python, Bash, or C-based tools to automate configuration, validation, diagnostics, software upgrades, and maintenance.
  • Validate storage security configurations, authentication and logging integration, and supported encryption and FIPS-related requirements.
  • Evaluate backup, replication, and recovery approaches, including integration with on-premises S3-compatible storage where supported.
  • Define manufacturing, integration, and test procedures, firmware baselines, deployment settings, and production handoff requirements.
  • Coordinate component qualification, engineering changes, and storage releases; maintain test plans, results, configuration guidance, and engineering records.

What Makes You a Qualified Candidate

Required Technical Skills

  • Strong systems engineering background spanning server, storage, networking, or infrastructure platforms, with hands-on storage integration and validation experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux systems and command-line environments.
  • Experience with platform debugging and performance analysis tools such as fio, iostat, perf, sar, iperf, sysbench, or similar utilities.
  • Proficiency with scripting or programming using Python, Bash, and/or C.
  • Experience working with firmware, BIOS, BMC/iDRAC, or large-scale system configuration.
  • Familiarity with high-speed networking technologies, including Ethernet or InfiniBand fabrics.
  • Experience with enterprise storage technologies, including NVMe, RAID, distributed storage, replication, or erasure coding concepts.
  • Understanding of rack-level storage integration and data cabling; experience supporting manufacturing, system integration, or factory deployment activities.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and EMC considerations in enterprise hardware deployments.
  • Ability to operate beyond a single technical specialty and take broader system-level ownership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with NetApp and/or Dell storage technologies; experience with either vendor is valuable.
  • NetApp ONTAP administration and configuration, including HA pairs, multi-application clusters, NFS and S3 access, resiliency testing, and data protection.
  • Dell PowerScale and/or PowerFlex administration, configuration, resiliency testing, performance tuning, and lifecycle maintenance.
  • Storage security experience, including authentication-provider integration, syslog, full-disk encryption, and supported FIPS-compliant configurations.
  • Automation of storage software and firmware upgrades, encryption configuration, and maintenance across clusters or multiple storage systems.
  • Experience working with global OEM/ODM vendors and manufacturing partners.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in storage, systems, platform, or infrastructure engineering, with demonstrated technical leadership and cross-functional ownership.

What You Will Bring

Strong systems thinking, sound engineering judgment, and ownership from investigation through resolution. Clear written and verbal communication, effective collaboration across engineering and manufacturing teams, and the ability to influence technical decisions without direct authority. Curiosity and adaptability as priorities and technologies evolve.
