The role requires a combination of strong data analysis skills for issue detection and root cause identification, and hands-on software engineering experience to investigate, fix, and close bugs in a production AV system.
Key Responsibilities
Bug Triage
- Analyze complex streams of on-road or sim data (logs, video files, sensor data, and metadata) to triage and identify issues detected during autonomous vehicle drives.
- Correlate on-road issues with corresponding SIM scenarios where applicable, to enable reproduction, regression testing, and improved coverage.
- Ensure consistent categorization and prioritization across triage workflows.
- Distinguish between SIM environment/tooling issues and AV stack behavior issues, and route to the appropriate owning team.
Bug fixing and closing
- Navigate a large C++ autonomy codebase to investigate root causes identified through triage, tracing issues through relevant modules (e.g., perception, planning, controls).
- Author targeted bug fixes and submit pull requests to the autonomy repository, following team code review and contribution standards.
- Participate in code reviews, providing and incorporating feedback to maintain code quality and system stability.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Vehicle Operations, Simulation Operations, and core engineering teams (e.g., perception, planning, controls, infrastructure) to ensure correct understanding, prioritization, and routing of issues.
- Interface regularly with core engineering to discuss issues, capture context, and maintain a working understanding of the overall autonomous driving and simulation platforms.
