About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Telematics Software Engineer with strong embedded Android experience to drive the migration of our Telematics Control Unit (TCU) software framework from Embedded Linux to Android (AOSP / Android Automotive), across both Commercial Vehicle / Off-Highway and Passenger Car programs. This is a foundational platform migration, not a feature port: you will re-architect vehicle-network interfaces, connectivity, diagnostics, and OTA mechanisms to run natively within the Android framework — HALs, system services, SELinux policy — while preserving the functional behavior, performance, and cybersecurity posture already proven on the current Linux platform. You will own the technical plan end-to-end and work directly with platform, cloud, and OEM customer teams to sequence it without disrupting shipping programs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the technical strategy and execution plan for porting the existing embedded Linux telematics framework to Android (AOSP / Android Automotive), including a gap analysis of what changes at the HAL, native service, and application layers.
  • Re-architect vehicle-network interfaces (CAN / CAN-FD, J1939, ISOBUS, UDS, DoIP) as Vehicle HAL (VHAL) extensions or native AIDL/HIDL services, preserving existing signal processing and diagnostics behavior.
  • Port connectivity and cloud communication — 4G/5G modem integration via the RIL/Telephony framework, GNSS, MQTT/HTTPS telemetry — to Android system services.
  • Migrate OTA (FOTA/SOTA) update mechanisms, remote diagnostics, and fleet-management data services to Android's update framework (A/B seamless updates or equivalent), maintaining feature parity with the current implementation.
  • Adapt regulatory and safety-related features (eCall / ERA-GLONASS, tachograph and driver-data interfaces, emissions/usage reporting) to run correctly within Android's process and permission model.
  • Define and enforce SELinux policies, Android permission boundaries, and secure/verified-boot equivalents to preserve or improve the platform's cybersecurity posture (ISO/SAE 21434, UNECE R155/R156) through the migration.
  • Build and maintain the Android build system (AOSP repo/manifest, device tree, BSP integration) for the target TCU hardware.
  • Define a test strategy that validates functional and performance parity between the Linux and Android implementations before cutover — regression suite, bench testing, and vehicle-level validation.
  • Collaborate with platform/BSP, cloud/backend, and OEM customer teams to sequence the migration against shipping programs; define a phased or parallel-run rollout plan.
  • Document architecture decisions and migration learnings, and mentor engineers ramping up on embedded Android.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronics Engineering, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of embedded software development in automotive, telematics, or IoT, with strong C/C++ (C++14 or later) and Java/Kotlin for Android-layer work.
  • Direct, hands-on experience with embedded Android / AOSP: HAL development (VHAL or custom HALs), AIDL/HIDL, system services, SELinux policy, and the Android build system (Soong/Make, repo/manifest).
  • Experience with cellular connectivity (LTE/5G modems, RIL integration on Android), GNSS, and cloud protocols (MQTT, TLS, REST).
  • Experience with Android OTA update mechanisms (A/B seamless updates or equivalent) and secure boot / verified boot concepts.
  • Proven experience carrying a non-trivial embedded system through a platform/OS migration — able to speak concretely to gap analysis, phased cutover, and regression risk.
  • Proficiency with automotive tooling: Vector CANoe/CANalyzer, bus analyzers, debuggers (JTAG/Lauterbach), Git, CI/CD.
  • Solid experience with Embedded Linux (Yocto/Buildroot) telematics platforms — you need to understand what you're migrating from as well as to.
  • Solid knowledge of vehicle networks and protocols: CAN / CAN-FD, J1939, UDS, DoIP; experience with at least one of ISOBUS, FMS, or Automotive Ethernet / SOME-IP.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior production experience specifically with Android Automotive OS (AAOS) and its Vehicle HAL.
  • AUTOSAR Classic or Adaptive experience alongside Android.
  • Knowledge of ISO/SAE 21434, UNECE R155/R156 (cybersecurity), and ISO 26262 (functional safety) as applied to an Android-based platform.
  • Experience with eCall / ERA-GLONASS, digital tachograph (EU 165/2014), or emissions telematics (e.g., OBD-over-telematics, China GB17691).
  • Familiarity with Automotive SPICE or comparable structured development processes.
  • Experience working with global OEM customers and multi-site development teams.
