The System Engineer supports the definition, integration, and delivery of complex metro systems, ensuring that technical requirements, interfaces, and system performance are effectively managed throughout the project lifecycle.

The role combines systems engineering, requirements and interface management, technical coordination, verification and validation, and multidisciplinary collaboration to ensure safe, compliant, and integrated system delivery.

Working closely with engineering disciplines, project teams, clients, suppliers, and other stakeholders, the System Engineer supports technical decision-making and successful delivery from design and integration through testing, commissioning, and acceptance.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop, implement and maintain the Requirements Management Plan and support systems engineering plans throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Administer IBM DOORS or an equivalent requirements management tool, supporting requirements capture, decomposition, allocation, attributes, baselines and controlled change.
  • Maintain end-to-end traceability from Employer’s Requirements through design, verification, validation, testing, commissioning and final acceptance.
  • Prepare and maintain requirements traceability, compliance, verification and validation matrices, ensuring each requirement has an agreed verification method, accountable party, evidence and acceptance status.
  • Plan and coordinate V&V activities including reviews, analyses, inspections, demonstrations and tests; review test specifications, procedures, reports and supporting evidence.
  • Support closure of V&V findings, non-compliances, failed tests, concessions and retesting, and contribute to design, test and commissioning readiness reviews.
  • Provide system integration assistance by supporting integration plans, interface registers, Interface Control Documents and resolution of functional and physical interface issues.
  • Assist multidisciplinary coordination across signalling, telecommunications, operational control, traction power, rolling stock, stations, depot, track, civil works, operations and maintenance.
  • Support integration workshops and subsystem/system integration testing, testing and commissioning, trial operations and acceptance activities.
  • Align requirements, V&V and integration activities with systems assurance, safety, RAM, cybersecurity, configuration management, approvals and certification requirements.
  • Monitor requirements and integration risks, constraints and dependencies; support mitigation actions and provide clear technical status reporting.
  • Work with clients, contractors, designers, operators, maintainers and assessors to achieve compliant, integrated and operationally suitable rail systems.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, Railway Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 8+ years of experience in systems engineering, requirements management, V&V, system integration, configuration management or systems assurance on railway, metro, high-speed rail or complex infrastructure programmes.
  • Practical experience developing and implementing Requirements Management Plans and managing requirements baselines across the project lifecycle.
  • Hands-on experience with IBM DOORS or an equivalent requirements management tool, including traceability, baseline control, change management and compliance reporting.
  • Experience preparing requirements traceability, compliance, verification and validation matrices and managing supporting evidence through acceptance.
  • Experience supporting multidisciplinary rail system integration, interface registers, Interface Control Documents, integration workshops and testing and commissioning activities.
  • Understanding of rail system architecture and interfaces across signalling, telecommunications, operational control and infrastructure; exposure to ETCS/ERTMS, CBTC, TMS or GSM-R is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with railway lifecycle and assurance frameworks, including EN 50126, EN 50128 and EN 50129, and associated approval and certification processes.
  • Experience in a PMC, Owner’s Engineer, Systems Integrator, consultancy, contractor or client organisation on large-scale railway programmes.
