Job Description

The Senior Data Quality and Test Automation Engineer ensures that healthcare data remains accurate, complete, consistent, secure, and traceable as it moves across source systems, integration layers, data platforms, and consumer applications. This role designs and implements automated validation for data pipelines, interfaces, transformations, migrations, and reconciliations, with particular attention to regulated healthcare data and PHI.

Key responsibilities

  • Define risk-based data quality and test strategies for healthcare data products, ETL and ELT pipelines, interfaces, warehouses, and migration programs.
  • Build reusable automation that validates schema, format, completeness, accuracy, uniqueness, referential integrity, timeliness, lineage, transformation logic, and source-to-target reconciliation.
  • Test healthcare data across claims, eligibility, enrollment, member, provider, clinical, encounter, pharmacy, laboratory, authorization, and financial subject areas.
  • Validate structured and semi-structured formats and standards, including relational data, CSV, fixed-width files, JSON, XML, Parquet or Avro, HL7 v2, FHIR resources.
  • Review mapping specifications, transformation rules, code-set crosswalks, business rules, and data contracts; identify ambiguity, gaps, and downstream quality risks before implementation.
  • Automate source-to-target comparisons, control totals, balancing, duplicate detection, exception reporting, and historical or incremental-load validation using SQL and a general-purpose programming language.
  • Create test data and synthetic or masked datasets that represent realistic healthcare scenarios while protecting PHI and complying with organizational privacy controls.
  • Validate batch, streaming, API, file-transfer, and event-driven integrations, including late-arriving data, replay, error handling, retries, idempotency, and recovery behavior.
  • Lead data migration testing across profiling, cleansing, conversion, cutover rehearsal, rollback, post-migration reconciliation, and production validation.
  • Integrate automated checks into CI/CD and data orchestration workflows; publish actionable quality results, thresholds, and failure diagnostics.
  • Partner with data engineering, product, analytics, clinical, compliance, and QA teams to triage defects, determine root cause, and prevent recurrence.
  • Establish quality metrics and observability for data defects, rejected records, drift, reconciliation variance, rule coverage, and pipeline reliability.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, data science, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Typically 6+ years in software or data quality engineering, including substantial hands-on automation for ETL, integration, analytics, or migration testing.
  • Advanced SQL skills and strong programming experience in Python, Java, C#, or a comparable language; experience with automated data-testing frameworks and version control.
  • Working knowledge of data warehouses platforms, APIs, message or file-based integrations, and CI/CD practices.
  • Strong healthcare data knowledge and an understanding of HIPAA, PHI handling, auditability, and controlled test-data practices.
  • Ability to interpret complex mappings, isolate data defects across multiple layers, and communicate findings clearly to technical and business stakeholders.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with cloud data platforms, distributed processing, data catalog or lineage tools, and data observability solutions.
  • Familiarity with healthcare interoperability and terminology standards such as FHIR, HL7, X12, ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, LOINC, SNOMED CT, or RxNorm.
