Field Service Technician – Automated Packaging Equipment

Taunton, MA | 70–85% Travel

Are you the person people call when a machine stops working?

If you enjoy figuring out mechanical and electrical problems, getting equipment back into production, and working directly with customers, Harpak-ULMA's Field Service team may be a strong next step.

We're looking for an experienced Field Service Technician to install, troubleshoot, repair and support automated packaging equipment at customer facilities.

You'll work on equipment including multi-head weighers, tray formers, tray sealers, fillers, dosers and form/fill/seal systems, giving you exposure to a wide range of mechanical, electrical and controls technologies.

This is a 70–85% travel position, so it's best suited for someone who enjoys being in the field, working independently, and taking on different technical challenges.

What You'll Do

  • Troubleshoot and repair mechanical and electrical equipment issues.
  • Install and support automated packaging machinery at customer facilities.
  • Diagnose problems involving mechanical, electrical and PLC-controlled systems.
  • Provide onsite and remote technical support.
  • Read mechanical drawings, blueprints and electrical schematics.
  • Work directly with customers to understand equipment problems and determine solutions.
  • Partner with technicians, engineers and service managers when additional expertise is needed.
  • Document service calls and technical solutions accurately.
  • Support customers with machine operation and ongoing equipment performance.

What We're Looking For

  • 3+ years of hands-on mechanical and electrical troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience servicing industrial machinery, automated equipment, packaging machinery or comparable electromechanical systems.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Familiarity with PLC-controlled machinery.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and electrical schematics.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Professional communication and customer-service skills.
  • High school diploma/GED; technical education in electrical, electronics, equipment maintenance or a related field is valued.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to obtain a passport.
  • Ability and willingness to travel 70–85%.

Experience That Would Be a Plus

  • Multi-head weighers
  • Automated packaging machinery
  • Filling or weighing systems
  • Food-processing equipment
  • Conveyors or material-handling systems
  • Industrial automation
  • PLC troubleshooting

You don't need experience with every type of equipment we support to be considered. Strong mechanical/electrical troubleshooting experience on comparable industrial equipment can translate well to this position.

We'll Invest in Your Training

You aren't expected to know every Harpak-ULMA machine on day one.

You'll continue developing your technical expertise through online learning, hands-on training and field shadowing with experienced technicians, while gaining exposure to multiple equipment technologies and product lines.

Why This Role

Technical variety

Work on multiple types of automated equipment rather than maintaining the same machine every day.

Real problem solving

Diagnose issues in customer environments where getting equipment running again makes an immediate difference.

Continued technical growth

Build deeper mechanical, electrical, controls and automation knowledge.

Independence with support

You'll have autonomy in the field while still having access to technicians, engineers and service managers when you need additional expertise.

Interested? Let's Talk.

If you're a strong mechanical/electrical troubleshooter and like the idea of traveling, solving machinery problems and working directly with customers, we'd like to learn more about your experience.

Apply with your resume to start the conversation.

Harpak-ULMA is an equal opportunity employer.
