Job Description
Principal Site Reliability Engineer (SRE)
Hitachi Energy is seeking a Principal Site Reliability Engineer to ensure the secure, reliable, and efficient operation of cloud‑hosted environments that support ESS software products and customer deployments.
The Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) competency within Cloud Operations ensures our SaaS products are reliable, scalable, secure, and cost efficient across AWS and Azure. The SRE role combines software engineering and operations to improve service reliability and operational excellence, including critical incident response, proactive problem management, error budgets, and toil reduction.
Responsibilities include ensuring operational excellence through consistent execution of cloud operations processes, continuous improvement initiatives, and cross functional collaboration with Product Development (R&D), Architecture, and Customer Experience (CX) teams.
A core responsibility is leading Cloud Maturity Assessments across products and cloud platforms, identifying gaps in cloud deployment/security/operational readiness, and partnering with Product Development (R&D), DevOps, Program Management Office (PMO), and SecOps to drive remediation into roadmaps and releases.
This role will require close partnership with Product Development (R&D), Quality, Security, and Customer Experience (CX) teams as part of supporting reliable product delivery and customer operations. In addition, the role will engage with peer cloud, infrastructure, and platform teams across the broader organization.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead Cloud Maturity Assessments across products deployed on AWS and Azure, using standardized scoring templates, weighted maturity dimensions, and executive reporting (heatmaps/dashboards) to identify maturity gaps and translate findings into an actionable improvement backlog.
- Define and implement reliability standards for observability, establish service health practices, and drive consistent operational practices across products and platforms to enable scalable “run” operations and consistent SLAs.
- Facilitate cloud provider / internal and operational readiness reviews (FTR/WAFR‑style) to ensure workloads meet validated standards and coordinate follow‑on “day‑2” operational improvements identified during reviews.
- Implement SRE best practices: SLIs/SLOs, error budgets, capacity planning, load/performance considerations, and automation to reduce operational toil.
- Lead post‑incident reviews and reliability improvements that measurably improve uptime, resilience, and operational consistency.
Success Measures (KPIs)
- Products complete standardized Cloud Maturity Assessments across AWS/Azure, with clear maturity levels, gap analysis, and remediation roadmaps.
- Measurable improvement in operational readiness: standardized observability, alerting, runbooks, DR/backup readiness, and reduced incident impact
- Strong partnership model established with other stakeholder organizations to deliver maturity improvements through release roadmaps.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field, and 10+ years of experience in Cloud Operations, Site Reliability Engineering, or Infrastructure Administration.
- Experience in Site Reliability Engineering, Production Operations, Platform Engineering, or DevOps supporting SaaS systems.
- Hands‑on experience with Azure and/or AWS production workloads (networking, IAM, monitoring, logging, scaling, DR/backup patterns).
- Strong grounding in observability (metrics/logs/traces), alerting strategy, and incident response operations.
- Ability to translate product operational gaps into a prioritized backlog and drive improvements through partner teams.
- Understanding of cloud‑native architectures, distributed systems, and virtualized environments.
- Proficiency with scripting or automation languages (such as Python, Bash, Ansible, or PowerShell).
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams.
- Ability to work with global teams across time zones.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience running structured operational readiness reviews (e.g., FTR/WAFR‑like reviews) and driving follow‑through on outcomes.
- Experience with CloudWatch and/or Azure Monitor / Log Analytics and building operational dashboards/alarms.
- Experience implementing SRE practices such as SLOs, error budgets, and toil reduction in a production environment.
- Understanding of cybersecurity practices, cloud compliance frameworks, and vulnerability management.
