The Enterprise Applications Architect will shape the strategy, architecture, and long-term evolution of a broad portfolio of enterprise business applications. This senior, hands-on individual-contributor role combines strategic planning with technical design, application administration, security governance, and advanced operational support. You will define future-state architectures, integration standards, lifecycle roadmaps, and environment strategies that support business objectives. Working closely with business leaders, IT teams, vendors, and external partners, you will translate complex requirements into secure, scalable, and reliable technology solutions. You will also lead technical initiatives involving modernization, upgrades, migrations, and system integrations. This position offers the opportunity to influence enterprise-wide technology decisions while remaining directly involved in the platforms and solutions you oversee.
Accountabilities
In this role, you will provide technical leadership and architectural governance across enterprise applications while ensuring the reliability, security, and continuous improvement of assigned platforms.
Key responsibilities include
- Application Strategy and Architecture
- Define and maintain application lifecycle strategies, future-state architectures, and multi-year technology roadmaps.
- Monitor vendor roadmaps, product releases, support requirements, end-of-life dates, and technology risks.
- Evaluate cloud, hosted, and on-premises deployment options based on business needs, security, resilience, cost, and long-term suitability.
- Recommend upgrades, migrations, replacements, and modernization initiatives.
- Maintain architecture documentation, system diagrams, integration maps, technical decisions, standards, and operating procedures.
- Business Process and Solution Design
- Collaborate with business leaders and process owners to understand operational requirements and identify improvement opportunities.
- Translate business needs into practical application, workflow, configuration, security, and integration solutions.
- Present solution options, dependencies, trade-offs, risks, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Prioritize standard platform capabilities and existing tools before introducing custom components or additional technologies.
- Enterprise Application Ownership and Administration
- Provide advanced administration, technical oversight, and operational support for assigned enterprise applications.
- Manage configurations, environments, releases, upgrades, patches, and technical dependencies.
- Monitor and improve application availability, performance, reliability, recoverability, and user experience.
- Provide Tier I–II administration and support for assigned services and act as a Tier III escalation point for complex technical issues.
- Investigate incidents, coordinate escalations, identify recurring problems, and implement lasting corrective actions.
- Support platforms that may include ERP, HRIS, payroll, time collection, expense management, project and construction applications, reporting services, and secure file transfer technologies.
- Integration Architecture and Data Exchange
- Establish enterprise integration architectures, standards, and reusable patterns for APIs, middleware, orchestration, secure file transfer, batch interfaces, and data synchronization.
- Design integrations between enterprise applications and third-party platforms.
- Develop technical requirements and designs for solutions delivered by internal developers, vendors, consultants, and implementation partners.
- Evaluate and recommend integration technologies and platforms.
- Review completed integrations to ensure alignment with architecture, security, documentation, monitoring, support, and recovery requirements.
- Troubleshoot interface failures and improve integration stability, performance, and resilience.
- Application Security and Governance
- Design and govern application security models, including roles, privileges, role-based access, segregation of duties, provisioning standards, and auditability.
- Translate business and security requirements into application permissions and technical controls.
- Manage user provisioning, access modifications, deprovisioning, roles, and permissions for specifically assigned applications.
- Establish and maintain application architecture, configuration, integration, and security standards.
- Work with Information Security, Infrastructure, Data, Internal Audit, and business teams to identify and mitigate risks.
- Maintain documentation and evidence supporting application access and integration security controls.
- Environment, Resilience, and Recovery
- Define and maintain environment strategies covering development, testing, quality assurance, production, disaster recovery, and failover.
- Coordinate the creation and maintenance of non-production environments for upgrades, integrations, troubleshooting, and testing.
- Own technical recovery and failover architecture for assigned applications.
- Coordinate recovery and failover testing, document results, and lead remediation of technical gaps.
- Ensure environment configurations, dependencies, and operating procedures remain accurate and supportable.
- Technical Leadership and Project Delivery
- Lead technical workstreams for application upgrades, migrations, implementations, replatforming, data-center moves, and modernization initiatives.
- Manage selected technical application projects when appropriate to their scope and available resources.
- Coordinate external consultants, developers, vendors, implementation partners, and managed service providers.
- Define technical requirements, deliverables, standards, and acceptance criteria for external resources.
- Review technical deliverables for quality, completeness, documentation, and alignment with approved architecture.
- Manage technical discussions with software vendors and service partners regarding roadmaps, upgrades, supportability, end-of-life events, and escalations.
- Promote knowledge transfer and sustainable internal processes when external resources are involved.
