Did you apply?

Engineer - E1 at Nationwide. We’ll keep it in your applied jobs, so you can see it later and be warned before applying to the same employer twice.

We are looking for a proactive Infrastructure Engineer who enjoys solving technical problems and wants to develop their skills across a broad range of Payments technologies.

You will work hands-on with critical Payments systems, supporting existing services while helping to design, build and deliver new capabilities. You will use modern engineering practices to create solutions that are secure, resilient, reliable and supportable, while working within Nationwide's technology and regulatory controls.

You will collaborate with application engineers, designers, business analysts and other specialists to translate requirements into effective technical solutions. The role provides experience across a varied technology estate, including Windows (Wintel), Linux, databases, scripting and automation, and observability technologies.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon or London offices. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

Nationwide is committed to the redeployment of our employees impacted by change, as such applications for redeployment candidates will be prioritised in this recruitment process.

If you’re a colleague on long-term absence (for example, on parental leave) or a temporary worker, please use your personal email address to submit an application.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll take a hands-on role in designing, building and supporting infrastructure solutions that underpin a range of Payments applications. Your work will combine project delivery with supporting existing services, where you’ll investigate issues, troubleshoot problems and help deliver effective technical solutions.

The role provides opportunities to develop your technical knowledge, work with new technologies and build your experience across modern infrastructure and engineering practices.

About you

You will have

  • Development lifecycle: Experience working through a structured technology delivery lifecycle, contributing to the design, build, testing, implementation and support of infrastructure solutions
  • Infrastructure engineering: Hands-on experience supporting and troubleshooting Windows and/or Linux infrastructure, including diagnosing technical issues and implementing appropriate solutions
  • Database technologies: Practical experience supporting relational database technologies, with knowledge of database configuration, connectivity, availability, performance and troubleshooting
  • Automation and scripting: Experience using PowerShell, Python, Bash or similar scripting technologies to automate engineering and operational activities
  • Security and resilience: Experience applying security, patching, vulnerability management, resilience and operational risk principles when delivering or supporting infrastructure
  • On-premises and cloud infrastructure: Understanding of on-premises and/or cloud-hosted architectures, and how infrastructure, databases, networks and applications integrate to provide reliable and supportable services
  • Continuous improvement and AI: Experience using monitoring and observability technologies to identify opportunities for improvement, with practical experience using AI-assisted tools to support engineering, automation, troubleshooting or technical delivery
