Responsibilities

Why This Role Matters

Today, data moves from product teams to analytics through disconnected flows and a lot of heroics. As the founding Director of Data Platform Engineering, you’ll replace that with a governed, reliable platform that product teams want to build on and analysts can trust.

You’ll set the vision, hire the managers and engineers, and align Engineering, Product, Reporting & Analytics, Security, and Compliance around one idea. Better data means faster insight for our clients and members.

What You’ll Actually Do

Set the platform strategy

Define and own the multi-year data platform roadmap, tied directly to Engineering and company objectives.

Build the organization

Hire, structure, and develop Engineering Managers and senior engineers from the ground up.

Define the operating model

Establish how product delivery teams and Reporting & Analytics work together, including data contracts, ownership, SLAs, and intake.

Drive architecture decisions

Guide the design of a scalable, AI-ready data lake platform on open table formats across ingestion, transformation, storage, and serving.

Make data trustworthy by default

Treat data quality, freshness, observability, lineage, and governance as first-class platform capabilities.

Partner on compliance

Work with Security, Privacy, and Compliance to meet healthcare regulatory requirements (HIPAA, [SOC 2, HITRUST, GDPR]).

Own budget and vendors

Manage the platform budget, including cloud cost management and vendor and tool selection.

Measure and report results

Define success metrics (platform adoption, time to analytics-ready data, SLA performance, cloud cost predictability) and report on them to senior leadership.

You’ll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Qualifications

What You Bring to Our Team

Education & Experience

  • 12+ years in data or software engineering, including 5+ years leading engineering organizations with managers reporting to you
  • Experience building or significantly scaling a large data platform in production in the cloud ([AWS / Azure / GCP])
  • Experience with regulated, sensitive data in healthcare, insurance, or a similar industry
  • Plus: Experience standing up a new organization or consolidating fragmented data functions

Technical Skills

  • Modern data architecture: data lakes, open table formats (Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake), batch and stream processing, data modeling, and orchestration
  • Data governance experience across many teams, covering data quality, PII/PHI management, freshness, and ownership
  • Preferred: Hands-on familiarity with Apache Spark, Apache Kafka, and event-driven or microservices architectures
  • Preferred: Experience supporting ML/AI workloads, such as feature stores, model serving, or LLM-based applications

No candidate will meet every single desired qualification. If your experience looks a little different from what we’ve identified and you think you can bring value to the role, we’d love to learn more about you!
