Sr Director, Engineering - Dev Platform at Uber. We’ll keep it in your applied jobs, so you can see it later and be warned before applying to the same employer twice.

About the Role

As the Senior Director of Engineering for Developer Platform, you will serve as the executive engineering leader responsible for building and scaling Uber’s modern “software factory.”

Developer Platform is positioned at the foundational core of Uber’s technology stack. You will own the strategy, architecture, and execution across critical developer ecosystems—spanning mobile developer infrastructure, continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD), backend testing frameworks, third-party and open-source software governance, and compliance and security review workflows.

Critically, you will spearhead Uber’s ambitious transition to a fully AI-driven Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), pioneering frontier AI engineering tools and developer-agent workflows at unprecedented enterprise scale.

What You’ll Do

  • Executive Leadership & AI-Driven SDLC Vision: Own the overarching vision, technical roadmap, and execution for Uber’s developer platform. Drive the strategic transformation toward fully AI-assisted software development, deploying cutting-edge AI tooling, code-generation workflows, and automated testing across an 8,000-engineer engineering organization.
  • Organizational Leadership & Global Scale: Lead and grow a distributed engineering organization of ~240+ engineers across the US (San Francisco, Seattle), the Netherlands (Amsterdam), and India. Manage a tiered leadership structure of Directors, Engineering Managers, and Principal/Distinguished Engineers.
  • Mobile & Specialized Infrastructure: Drive the strategy for specialized developer infrastructure, including dedicated mobile platforms supporting iOS and Android build ecosystems (managing extensive bare-metal hardware clusters such as Mac mini build farms, native toolchains, and continuous release pipelines).
  • CI/CD, Testing & Platform Reliability: Oversee the core backend build, CI/CD pipelines, and automated testing suites that form the inner loop of Uber engineers' daily workflows, ensuring fast feedback loops, high system reliability, and rapid deployment velocity.
  • Engineering Governance, Security & Open Source: Establish robust frameworks for managing third-party open-source dependencies, licensing compliance, and automated architectural/security/legal review tooling across the entire code repository.
  • Deep Architectural Acumen (“Forest and the Trees”): Balance high-level strategic executive presence with deep technical curiosity and fluency. Deeply understand system bottlenecks, developer ergonomics, and architectural tradeoffs to guide technical decisions alongside senior technical leaders.
  • Industry Representation & Talent Brand: Champion Uber’s developer experience and technical innovations externally through tech conferences, open-source initiatives, and engineering publications to attract world-class platform and developer-tooling talent.

What You Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • A minimum of 15 years of professional software engineering experience building and deploying complex, large-scale systems.
  • A minimum of 10 years of direct management experience leading software engineering teams, including substantial experience managing managers of managers and executive engineering leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Developer Tools Industry Expertise: Prior engineering leadership experience within dedicated developer-tooling companies (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, JetBrains, or modern AI dev-tool startups) or leading large-scale internal developer platform organizations (100+ engineers) at hyper-growth tech companies.
  • Platform & Tooling Background: Deep domain experience in developer tooling, infrastructure, developer experience (DevEx), build systems, CI/CD pipelines, or distributed platform engineering.
  • AI & Next-Gen SDLC Fluency: Demonstrated thought leadership or practical experience integrating LLMs, code intelligence, and AI-driven automation into the developer toolchain and software development workflows.
  • Startup Agility & Large-Scale Rigor: A proven background navigating both early-stage startup environments (scrappiness, speed, high-velocity execution) and massive enterprise scale (governance, reliability, cross-functional alignment).
  • Mobile & CI/CD Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with the unique constraints of building and releasing mobile applications at scale (iOS/Android toolchains, on-premise hardware clusters) alongside distributed backend microservice architectures.
  • Executive Presence & Influence: Strong industry presence, compelling storytelling skills, and a demonstrated ability to rally multi-thousand-person developer organizations around platform migrations and cultural developer shifts.
