QUALIFICATIONS

  • • 10+ years of electrical engineering experience focused on medium-voltage power distribution, switchgear systems, substations, mission-critical infrastructure, utility systems, or industrial power systems.
  • Extensive hands-on experience with medium-voltage metal-clad and metal-enclosed switchgear, vacuum circuit breakers, protective relaying, arc-resistant switchgear, and MV distribution systems.
  • Experience developing, reviewing, and maintaining technical specifications for medium-voltage switchgear including bus ratings, interrupting ratings, protection schemes, metering, control systems, grounding, and interface requirements.

Demonstrated experience performing and reviewing

  • Short-circuit studies
  • Arc-flash studies
  • Protection coordination studies
  • Load-flow studies

using ETAP, SKM PowerTools, EasyPower, or similar software.

  • Experience developing relay settings and protection schemes for medium-voltage electrical systems.
  • Experience reviewing vendor submittals, approval drawings, shop drawings, and manufacturing packages for medium-voltage equipment.
  • Experience leading or witnessing Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), equipment inspections, manufacturing reviews, and technical readiness reviews.

Strong knowledge of

  • IEEE C37 standards
  • IEC 62271 standards
  • NEC requirements
  • Medium-voltage power system design practices
  • Experience coordinating switchgear interfaces with transformers, substations, generators, UPS systems, busway systems, e-houses, and critical power infrastructure.
  • Experience working directly with major switchgear manufacturers, suppliers, fabricators, EPC firms, or mission-critical engineering organizations.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience supporting hyperscale data centers, AI infrastructure, mission-critical facilities, semiconductor facilities, utility infrastructure, or large industrial campuses.
  • Experience serving as the technical authority or product owner for medium-voltage switchgear programs.

Experience with equipment supplied by manufacturers such as

  • Client
  • Schneider Electric
  • ABB
  • Siemens
  • Client Vernova
  • Hitachi Energy
  • Experience supporting medium-voltage systems ranging from 5kV through 35kV.
  • Experience developing fleet-wide electrical standards, reference designs, or equipment specifications.
  • Experience supporting commissioning, energization, startup, and operational turnover activities.
  • Familiarity with medium-voltage DC systems, solid-state breakers, digital switchgear technologies, or next-generation power distribution architectures.
  • Experience supporting high-density compute loads, AI infrastructure, or large-scale mission-critical campuses.
  • Experience supporting prefabricated electrical systems, e-houses, modular electrical infrastructure, or manufactured power products.

The Electrical Equipment Team

You'll join the product engineering group that designs the electrical equipment inside

Fluidstack's data centers

medium-voltage switchgear, low-voltage switchboards and busway, and the prefabricated electrical skids and e-houses that carry them to site. We specify and design this equipment as products, not one-off procurements, so the same designs repeat across gigawatt-scale campuses and arrive on a schedule the build can hold.

Examples of key problems the team is working on

  • Standardizing medium-voltage switchgear lineups so that long-lead orders can be placed before a site's final electrical design is complete.
  • Qualifying second and third sources for switchgear, breakers, and protection relays without reopening the design each time.
  • Holding arc-flash, short-circuit, and coordination margins across equipment from different vendors.
  • Turning field and commissioning findings into design changes that reach the next production lot.

Role Scope

  • Own the medium-voltage switchgear product. Define the standard lineups, ratings, and configurations Fluidstack buys, and hold vendors to them.
  • Run the technical specification. Write and maintain the switchgear specifications, including bus ratings, breaker duty, protection and metering, arc-resistant construction, and interface requirements to transformers and e-houses.
  • Lead vendor engineering. Review vendor drawings, run factory acceptance tests, and close technical exceptions before release to manufacture.
  • Drive protection coordination. Deliver the short-circuit and coordination studies for the medium-voltage system and set relay settings the commissioning team can apply.
  • Feed the roadmap. Bring emerging switchgear technology, including solid-state and higher-voltage options, into the product roadmap with cost and schedule cases.

What We're Looking For

  • 10+ years of electrical engineering on medium-voltage switchgear, either at an equipment manufacturer or specifying and commissioning it for mission-critical facilities.
  • Hands-on with metal-clad and metal-enclosed switchgear, vacuum circuit breakers, protection relays, and arc-resistant designs.
  • You have run short-circuit, arc-flash, and coordination studies in ETAP, SKM, or equivalent and set relays from them.
  • Working knowledge of IEEE C37, IEC 62271, and NEC requirements for medium-voltage installations.
  • You have reviewed vendor submittals and run factory acceptance tests, and you know which exceptions matter.
  • You write specifications that a vendor can bid without a meeting.
  • Bonus: Professional Engineer license. Experience with switchgear for high-density compute loads. Exposure to solid-state breakers or medium-voltage DC.

BENEFITS SUMMARY

Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate or annual salary only, unless otherwise stated. In addition to base compensation, full-time roles are eligible for Medical, Dental, Vision, Commuter and 401K benefits with company matching.
