In doing so, together we are transforming e-commerce in restaurants and making the till grow for Tillster and our customers.

Are you a passionate Software Engineer with a knack for designing and developing quality software solutions? Tillster is the place for you. We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer to join our Back End Payments Engineering team.

About the Role

As a Software Engineer – Back End (Payments), you will play a pivotal role in building and maintaining the card-present payment integrations behind Tillster's self-service kiosks, working with providers such as Adyen, Shift4, and Global Payments.

You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software solutions that meet business needs while following best practices, including design patterns, architectural patterns, and thorough testing methodologies.

You will contribute to fostering an agile, collaborative, and high-performing development environment.

What You'll Do

  • Build and maintain integrations with card-present payment providers (Adyen, Shift4, Global Payments, and others) for Tillster's self-service kiosk platform.
  • Own the full transaction lifecycle: authorization, capture, voids, refunds, reversals, and reconciliation, including recovery from timeouts and partial failures.
  • Work with processor certification teams to get integrations certified and into production.
  • Keep payment flows PCI DSS compliant, minimizing scope through P2PE and tokenization.
  • Troubleshoot live payment issues across terminals, kiosks, and backend services.
  • Implement robust unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests to ensure high-quality code. Work towards achieving high test coverage and adopting test-driven development (TDD) where applicable.
  • Conduct and participate in code reviews, ensuring adherence to coding standards, best practices, and maintainability, while critically evaluating AI-generated code outputs for security and correctness.
  • Participate in design sessions to help improve the overall architecture of the platform.
  • Work with stakeholders and product owners to understand requirements and develop solutions.
  • Continuously expand your technical knowledge and skills through Tillster's learning and development resources.

About You

  • 2 to 5 years of backend development experience in Java or a comparable object-oriented programming (OOP) language.
  • Experience implementing comprehensive testing strategies, including unit tests, integration tests, and end-to-end tests.
  • Hands-on experience integrating with at least one payment processor or gateway API; card-present or terminal integration strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of EMV, contactless payments, and authorization and settlement flows.
  • Working knowledge of PCI DSS and secure handling of payment data.
  • Comfortable debugging across network, device, and service boundaries.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of security best practices in software development, including OAuth, JWT, encryption, and related technologies.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Prior experience with AWS serverless technologies and companion services such as DynamoDB, SQS, etc., is beneficial but not required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a mindset geared toward continuous improvement.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with the ability to handle ambiguity and changing requirements.

The Interview Process

  • Recruiter Interview: Initial conversation with a Talent Acquisition specialist.
  • Code Review Interview: Technical code review with our Back End Engineering Manager.
  • Payments Technical Interview: Discussion covering transaction flows, failure handling, and PCI considerations.
  • Final Interview: Interview with our SVP of Software Engineering.
