Position Summary

We are seeking a Diesel Fuel Systems Calibration Engineer to support the development, calibration, and validation of diesel fuel-system control functions. This entry-level position is well suited for a recent engineering graduate with relevant hands-on experience gained through internships, co-ops, university research, or student vehicle programs.

The ideal candidate has a strong foundation in engine systems, controls, and system-level engineering, combined with an analytical mindset and the ability to use modern engineering tools to solve calibration challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, optimize, and validate diesel fuel-system control parameters to meet engineering targets for emissions, fuel consumption, performance, drivability, diagnostics, and robustness.
  • Perform calibration and validation using engine and chassis dynamometers, test vehicles, test tracks, and open-road testing.
  • Calibrate and evaluate fuel-system functions including rail-pressure control, injection quantity, injection timing, multiple-injection strategies, and diagnostic functions.
  • Analyze interactions between ECU software and controls, calibration parameters, sensors, actuators, fuel-system components, and engine behavior.
  • Plan and execute calibration tests, analyze measurement data, evaluate results against engineering targets, and recommend calibration changes.
  • Utilize and support the development of advanced calibration and data-acquisition tools to support data analysis, model-based calibration, optimization, and automation.
  • Perform system-level troubleshooting and root-cause analysis of fuel-system, controls, calibration, and vehicle performance issues.
  • Evaluate and present engine, powertrain, and vehicle test results and communicate technical conclusions to engineering teams and customers.
  • Collaborate with controls, systems, software, hardware, and test engineers to resolve technical issues and achieve project targets.
  • Participate in local and international calibration networks to exchange technical knowledge and stay current with control-system and calibration developments.
  • Support vehicle validation programs, including winter, summer, and altitude testing, with travel of up to 12 weeks per year.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 1-3 years of experience with engine controls, powertrain systems, fuel systems, or vehicle technologies through an internship, co-op, professional experience, university research, Formula SAE, EcoCAR, or a similar vehicle program.
  • Fundamental understanding of internal combustion engines, control systems, sensors, actuators, and feedback control.
  • Strong system-level problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Experience with engineering data acquisition, analysis, and modeling tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, ETAS tools, or comparable engineering environments.
  • Experience using Python as an engineering analysis or automation tool.
  • Exposure to AI or machine-learning methods applied to engineering problems or engineering data.
  • Strong technical communication and teamwork skills.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness and ability to travel up to 12 weeks per year in support of vehicle testing and validation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous internship, co-op, or project experience in diesel engine, fuel-system, powertrain, or controls calibration.
  • Understanding of diesel engine and common-rail fuel-injection technologies.
  • Hands-on experience working with complex control functions and Electronic Control Units (ECUs).
  • Experience with automotive calibration and data-acquisition tools such as ETAS INCA, CANape, or similar tools.
  • Experience with engine dynamometer, chassis dynamometer, or vehicle testing.
  • Understanding of the relationship between fuel injection, combustion, emissions, performance, fuel economy, and drivability.
  • Experience with model-based calibration, data analytics, optimization, or automated calibration methods.
  • Strong data-analysis and technical presentation skills.
  • A passion for automotive engineering and hands-on development of complex powertrain systems.
