Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer (SSE) with strong full stack development experience in Java and J2EE to design, build, and maintain complex enterprise applications. Based in India, you will be a core individual contributor on an offshore delivery team, working closely with your Technical Lead / Manager and Onshore Engineers to deliver reliable, high-quality solutions.

Java and J2EE are mandatory for this role. Experience with AWS is a good-to-have that will help you contribute to cloud deployment and modernization work. You will bring strong engineering fundamentals, a proactive ownership mindset, and a genuine commitment to AI-assisted development as a standard part of your daily workflow.

Key Responsibilities

Full Stack Development

  • Design and develop well-structured, testable, and performant backend services and APIs using Java and J2EE technologies (Servlets, JSP, JDBC, JPA/Hibernate, JMS, EJB) and Spring/Spring Boot.
  • Build and maintain RESTful and SOAP web services, including integrations with internal and third-party systems.
  • Build responsive, accessible front-end features using React or Angular (or JSP-based UI where legacy applications require it), consuming REST APIs and integrating with backend services.
  • Design and optimize relational database schemas, queries, and stored procedures in Oracle, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL.
  • Write clean, maintainable code that meets team coding standards and passes peer code review without requiring significant rework.
  • Implement unit, integration, and component-level automated tests (JUnit, Mockito) to maintain high code coverage and prevent regression.

Participate actively in sprint ceremonies

daily standups, sprint planning, backlog refinement, retrospectives, and demos.

  • Investigate and resolve production defects and incidents, including root-cause analysis and preventive improvements.

Contribute to technical documentation

API contracts, data flow diagrams, runbooks, and deployment guides.

Application Modernization & Quality

  • Enhance and support existing J2EE applications running on application servers such as WebSphere, WebLogic, JBoss, or Tomcat, and help modernize them toward Spring Boot and microservice-based designs where appropriate.
  • Profile and tune application performance, covering JVM behavior, database access, and caching.
  • Apply secure coding practices, including input validation, access control, and audit logging, and ensure sensitive data is handled in line with client security and compliance requirements.
  • Raise requirement ambiguities and design concerns early, working with the Technical Lead and onshore team to resolve them before they impact delivery.

Cloud & DevOps Participation (Good to Have)

  • Deploy and operate services on AWS using ECS/EKS, EC2, RDS, S3, Lambda, SQS/SNS, and API Gateway.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipeline setup and maintenance using Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps.
  • Write and maintain Dockerfiles and, where applicable, Kubernetes manifests for containerized service deployment.
  • Monitor application health, investigate alerts, and participate in on-call rotations as applicable.

Required Qualifications (Mandatory)

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 6–8 years of software engineering experience with a strong focus on full stack Java development.
  • Strong proficiency in Java (8 or higher) and core concepts: collections, concurrency, exception handling, streams, and memory management.

Strong hands-on experience with J2EE / Jakarta EE

Servlets, JSP, JDBC, JPA/Hibernate, JMS, and EJB.

  • Strong experience with the Spring ecosystem (Spring Core, Spring MVC, Spring Boot, Spring Data, Spring Security).
  • Solid working knowledge of a modern front-end framework (React or Angular) along with HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Solid understanding of RESTful API design principles, authentication/authorization (OAuth2, JWT), and API security; working knowledge of SOAP/XML web services.
  • Proficient in SQL with Oracle, SQL Server, or PostgreSQL: schema design, complex queries, and performance tuning.
  • Hands-on experience with Maven or Gradle, Git-based workflows, and JUnit/Mockito for automated testing.
  • Familiarity with software design patterns (MVC, Singleton, Factory, Repository, DAO) and SOLID principles.
  • Good verbal and written English communication skills for working effectively with onshore and offshore team members.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum delivery environments.

Good to Have

Working knowledge of AWS core services

ECS or EKS, EC2, RDS, S3, Lambda, SQS/SNS, and API Gateway.

  • AWS Certified Developer - Associate or Cloud Practitioner certification.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps), Docker, and basic Kubernetes.
  • Experience with microservices architecture and event-driven messaging (Kafka, RabbitMQ, ActiveMQ, AWS EventBridge).
  • Experience with application servers such as WebSphere, WebLogic, or JBoss, and with migrating legacy J2EE applications to Spring Boot.
  • Experience with GraphQL APIs, Redis or other caching layers, and observability tools (CloudWatch, Splunk, ELK, Dynatrace).
  • Exposure to the US healthcare domain and healthcare data standards (HL7, FHIR, X12 EDI).

AI-Assisted Engineering (Required)

  • Active, consistent use of AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or equivalent) as a core part of daily engineering work, for code generation, test writing, refactoring, debugging, and documentation.

Validates all AI-generated code before committing

checks for correctness, security issues, and unintended behaviors, and never treats AI output as production-ready without review.

Handles prompts responsibly

never includes PHI, member or sensitive customer data, client credentials, or proprietary code in prompts sent to external AI tools.

  • Actively looks for ways to use AI assistance to improve personal productivity and code quality, and shares effective techniques with teammates.
  • Basic awareness of AI/LLM concepts, including what RAG, embeddings, and prompt engineering are, sufficient to participate in team discussions on AI-driven feature development.
