Position Overview & Key Responsibilities
The Lead PostgreSQL Database Administrator (Specialist III) is a senior technical leadership role responsible for the strategic design, implementation, administration, security, and performance optimization of enterprise-scale PostgreSQL database environments. Serving as the primary database authority, you will oversee high-volume production databases, ensuring maximum uptime, scalability, and data integrity. This role requires a blend of deep technical expertise in PostgreSQL internals and strong leadership capabilities to guide database migration initiatives, establish enterprise standards, and mentor application development and database teams.
- Enterprise Database Administration: Manage, monitor, and maintain high-performance PostgreSQL database instances across production, staging, and development environments, ensuring 24/7 availability for mission-critical applications.
- Performance Tuning & Optimization: Perform advanced database tuning, query optimization, index management, and capacity planning. Analyze execution plans, configure database parameters (e.g., memory allocation, connection pooling), and manage database maintenance tasks (e.g., vacuuming, bloat mitigation).
- High Availability & Disaster Recovery: Design, implement, and manage robust database backup, recovery, replication (streaming and logical), and high-availability (HA) clustering solutions (e.g., Patroni, pg_backrest) to guarantee minimal Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO).
- Database Security & Compliance: Enforce rigorous database security measures, including role-based access control (RBAC), data encryption (at rest and in transit), vulnerability patching, and compliance auditing to protect sensitive public sector data.
- Migration Leadership & Consulting: Lead complex database migration projects (including legacy-to-PostgreSQL migrations) and provide expert database consulting, schema design guidance, and PL/pgSQL code reviews to application development teams.
- Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Provide technical direction for the database administration team, establish enterprise database standards and best practices, and mentor junior DBAs and developers.
